Elderly people who live alone often find good companions with their dog. There are certain breeds that are more suitable for the elderly. This article will discuss some of the dog breeds that are best for seniors.

Miniature Poodle

Like their name suggests, these dogs are very small. They typically weigh up to 20 pounds and can live up to 18 years. Miniature poodles are very energetic and easy to train. They crave attention, so they’re very good for owners who are home all the time.

Cocker Spaniel

Cocker spaniels are very devoted dogs that love human companionship. They can be kept inside if you live in an apartment, but they require regular exercise outside. These dogs are also suitable to get even if you have other household pets.

Maltese

Another popular Dog Breed for seniors is the Maltese. Like miniature poodles, they love attention so they like owners who are home a lot. They get well with others as long as they have been socialized properly. If you get a Maltese, you’ll need to understand that they require quite frequent grooming.

Pekingese

Pekingese dogs aren’t capable of moving around fast. Therefore, they’re a good choice if you yourself can’t get around all that well. The only downside to these dogs is that they require frequent grooming and trips to a professional groomer.

Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus can live up to 16 years and weigh up to 16 pounds. These dogs are typically very gentle and love to sit in your lap. They’re also energetic and require plenty of exercise. They will need to be combed and brushed on a daily basis, but won’t shed hair all over your house.

Boston Terrier

Another popular dog breed for seniors is the Boston Terrier. It can weigh up to 25 pounds and live up to 14 years when taken care of properly. These dogs are very loyal and affectionate. They love to play, but don’t require a lot of time outdoors. They will need to be brushed on a regular basis, but not nearly as often as some of the breeds discussed earlier.

These are some of the best dog breeds for seniors. If you aren’t that mobile, then you should consider getting a Pekingese dog. Cocker spaniels are very loving too, but you’ll need to ensure you have the time to take them outside for exercise frequently. Shih tzus will also need plenty of exercise.
