Advice for Preparing your Dog for a Family Road Trip by Vanessa A Vasak
If you and your family are planning a road trip and want to take the family dog this time, there are a few things you need to do so that the experience is a positive one, not only for your family but for your dog as well. Not all dogs are crazy about riding in cars, so far in advance of your trip you will want to test your dog’s car worthiness to see if he can handle it.
Always provide treats during these test drives so he understands that riding in the car is a positive thing not a punishment! If your dog is not crazy about the car or gets car sick, you will want to think about a dog sitter or kennel stay while the family goes on the road trip. If your dog enjoyed his test drives, then there are other things you need to do in advance of your road trip.
A trip to the veterinarian’s office should be scheduled at least a month in advance of your road trip. Check and make sure that your dog is current on all of his vaccinations like rabies as well as bordatella, which helps prevent kennel cough should you end up boarding him at any time in a kennel or dog spa.
If you are planning to indulge in any camping, hiking or other outdoor activity in a country or forested setting, a Lyme disease vaccination for your dog might be a smart move to prevent this tick borne disease. Be sure to ask for a current record of your dog’s vaccination records in case any official of the law like park rangers ask for proof of disease protection.
Food and water are two of the most important things you need for your dog when traveling via car. Keep several bottles of water handy along with a bowl so that your dog can drink more easily while in the car. This is important because it may not always be convenient to find a store or place that offers clean drinking water for him.
Always bring a good supply of his regular food. Switching Dog Food brands if his regular brand is unavailable could cause gastronomical distress resulting in diarrhea, gas or vomiting. You definitely do not want your dog doing these things in your car or even a hotel room or camp site.
Your dog’s comfort items like a favorite blanket or toy is essential as they will help ease the anxiety and excitement of traveling in a car. Of course, an extra leash and collar is important, especially when you have to pull over for potty breaks with your dog or just taking him for a walk to stretch his legs for exercise. Make sure that all collars you bring have his identification tags in case he gets loose. If someone else finds him, the identification tags will help them get your dog back to you.
If you plan to stay overnight in hotels or even campsites, check the establishment’s pet rules and restrictions. Not all hotels are Pet Friendly so you want to find places in advance and make reservations. In addition, it might be a smart move to have the contact information for a veterinarian in the local area in case of a Dog Health emergency.
Never, ever leave your pet in the car by himself even if it is a cool day. This is an unsafe practice and at the worst, your dog could become ill or tear up the car with his claws and teeth trying to get out and be with you. Always have a plan if you want to go shopping or do some other activity where a dog is not allowed to enter.
Traveling with your dog can be an adventure and whether it is a fun one is up to you. Plan ahead for every foreseeable contingency and you will be well prepared for your road trip with your family dog.

Two Dachshunds at Troy A Dogs Tale $24.69 This delightful lighthearted book is the true story of a love affair. A love affair between the author and his two miniature dachshunds, one with which anyone who has ever loved a dog will empathise. They were born in Africa and travelled widely there. They were quite possibly the first dogs ever to cross Europe, solely by water from the North Sea to the Black Sea. They swam in the great lakes of Africa, in seven seas, chased baboons in Africa, rabbits in the High Jura on the European watershed, and lizards in the ruins of Troy. Sometimes they enjoyed it, sometimes they found it confusing, sometimes, as in a Turkish winter, they distinctly disapproved. It was an adventurous life… This is a dogs tale, a tale of two small dogs. Small dogs they may have been, and perhaps like Pooh, of small brain, but very few dogs can have been as well travelled or better loved. The author was born in England but grew up on the continent and in East Africa. He served in the British army then moved to Zimbabwe, or Rhodesia as it was, in the BSA Police. After a career in local Government, hotels and sports clubs and finally as bursar of a group of private schools he returned to the UK where he now runs a small convenience store. He has been married to his wife Jean for forty one years, has two married daughters and four teenage grandsons. His passion is boats of all kinds and he spends as much time as he can on his small barge in France, and after studying French in 3 Months for five years he hopes in a few more years to master the language. Author: Lousada, Jeremy Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 120 Publication Date: 2011/08/05 Language: English Dimensions: 8.27 x 5.83 x 0.28 inches |

Allow Me to Explain… $109.93 Through the process of selection the measurement and prediction of behaviour has become an important activity in the field of psychology, especially in the workplace. A dynamic selection process can assist the organisation in identifying individuals who best suit its needs. Psychometric testing is the most common procedure in the prediction of human behaviour during selection. Seeing that not all instruments are valid and reliable, much controversy still exists on the use of such instruments in South Africa. Only by introducing instruments that apply to these criteria will psychometrics have a future in labour practices. The purpose of this study was to assess the construct validity of the First View , an instrument originating in the United States, for selection purposes in South Africa. By incorporating personality and cognitive ability into one instrument, First View , as a psychometric instrument, can be used in selection to determine job performance. The cognitive scale is based on Guilfords Structure of Intellect and the personal scale on the Big Five Personality factors.
