i find it hard to believe that you can actually learn this trade online without hands on experience. does anyone know anything about this?

dog grooming isn’t something that you can learn from books and the internet. You have to know how to handle a dog, and you don’t learn that unless you have a dog right in front of you. I’d suggest getting hired on as a bather at a local grooming salon (make sure it’s a good one), and then learn that way by apprenticing under a groomer. Or you could actually go to grooming school.
